Following assent, teens are asked to report the following demographic information: name, age, ethnicity (Hispanic or Latiné and Middle Eastern or North African), race, pronouns, gender, preferred language, the reason for visiting primary care, and preferred method for contact (ie, email or text message).

As a franchise trademark of HINTS United States, HINTS Germany started in 2018 as a cooperative project between the Stiftung Gesundheitswissen and the Hanover Center for Health Communication (for a further description refer to the study by Link et al [36]). The main goal of the project was to establish a nationally representative survey that collected data on several topics of health information seeking, with a close methodological analogy to the HINTS United States original.

Following the study by Link et al [31], we measured risk perception by asking for the susceptibility and the severity of an illness [21,56]. Both items were measured on a Likert-type scale ranging from 1 (not at all) to 10 (extremely; Cronbach α=.74; mean 4.65, SD 2.12). An adapted measurement by Yang and Kahlor [38] was used to assess the respondents’ negative affective risk responses.
