Particularly, asynchronous video-based telerehabilitation interventions can help overcome the time constraints of in-person and remote synchronous care [32]. Asynchronous digital health tools, also known as “store-and-forward” technology, allow for remote, non–real-time communication between providers and patients. This enables both parties to access the platform at their convenience [33].

However, none of these reviews focused on the role of 2-way asynchronous communication between patients and health care professionals. Specifically, they have not synthesized the evidence of the effectiveness of asynchronous digital health (either as an isolated intervention or in combination with other modalities) nor explored patients' and professional stakeholders' perspectives on asynchronous consulting.

Little evidence exists on the predictors and outcomes associated with asynchronous depression screening programs, such as which patient groups are more likely to engage in asynchronous depression screening and whether asynchronous screening affects a provider’s clinical response [13-15]. Asynchronous previsit patient questionnaires can ease the administrative burden on frontline clinical staff and may help to efficiently identify problems ahead of primary care visits.

The web-based clinic under study leverages an asynchronous physician consult model, where orders can be placed after chart and data review, plus relevant information provided by the patient. Asynchronous models reduce costs and increase efficiency and access due to the flexibility of prescriber availability.

To provide continuing patient care, existing outpatient models were redesigned to enable the use of store-and-forward asynchronous teledermatology. In comparison with synchronous real-time teledermatology (primarily video consultations), asynchronous teledermatology involves electronically transmitting clinical details and images to a clinician for review at a different time and location [2].

Store-and-Forward Images in Teledermatology: Narrative Literature Review
One practical advantage of asynchronous teledermatology is the potential to expand health care access to underserved populations (Figure 1). Several urban programs have used images obtained during PCP visits for SAF teledermatology consultation in safety-net health care systems [26-29]. All of the studies found that asynchronous consultation resulted in substantially reduced waiting periods for dermatologic care compared to traditional referral systems [26-29].

Relevant literature has multiple confounds, including the fact that the relative impact of live (synchronous) and recorded (asynchronous) digital mindfulness training for the workplace is completely unknown.
Multiple systematic reviews have demonstrated solid evidence that mindfulness training has a positive impact on stress and other indicators of mental health [12-16].

Telemedicine can be synchronous or asynchronous [3]. For example, in otolaryngology, a Veterans Affairs model uses a community-based outpatient clinic to connect with an otolaryngologist [4]. It is similar to walk-in office clinics in that a clinic visit happens in real time.
