Barriers and Facilitators Affecting Access to Health Care for People With Syphilis: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Barriers and Facilitators Affecting Access to Health Care for People With Syphilis: Protocol for a Scoping Review

If not treated, syphilis may cause serious complications, such as an increased risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections, neurological and ocular changes, hearing or balance impairments (or both), death, neonatal death, prematurity, low birth weight, and stillbirths. Syphilis is the second most common cause of stillbirths due to infectious diseases worldwide [2]. Syphilis is one of the most important sexually transmitted infections in the world [3].

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Motivational Interviewing–Based Telehealth Intervention for Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening: Protocol for a Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Study

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Motivational Interviewing–Based Telehealth Intervention for Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening: Protocol for a Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Study

For example, new syphilis infections can increase HIV viral loads and decrease CD4 cell counts, and syphilitic ulcers can aid the passage of HIV [9]. These observations underscore the importance of diagnosing and treating bacterial STIs among GBMSM-LWH in a timely manner.

Characteristics of Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, and Syphilis Coinfection in People With HIV/AIDS Contracted Through Different Sources: Retrospective Study

Characteristics of Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, and Syphilis Coinfection in People With HIV/AIDS Contracted Through Different Sources: Retrospective Study

Hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis infection are also all major public health problems worldwide. HBV, HCV, and syphilis are the 3 most common infections among people living with HIV/AIDS all over the world and share similar transmission routes [2,3]. The burden of HBV, HCV, and syphilis infection in people living with HIV/AIDS is even larger than in the general population. The ever-increasing burden of these infections has become a growing concern [4].

Epidemiology of Syphilis in Pregnancy and Congenital Syphilis in Brazil and the Risk or Associated Factors: Protocol for a Systematic Review

Epidemiology of Syphilis in Pregnancy and Congenital Syphilis in Brazil and the Risk or Associated Factors: Protocol for a Systematic Review

Globally, 2 million out of 36 million syphilis infections occur in pregnant women [7], resulting in congenital syphilis (infection of the fetus) and adverse events (eg, early fetal death, stillbirth, premature birth, low birth weight, and neonatal death) [8,9].

Mucocutaneous Manifestations Among HIV-Infected Patients in Madagascar: Cross-Sectional Study

Mucocutaneous Manifestations Among HIV-Infected Patients in Madagascar: Cross-Sectional Study

The most common fungal infection was oral candidiasis, while herpes zoster (Figure 1) and syphilis were the most common viral and bacterial infections, respectively. Additionally, 10 (5.9%) of 168 patients presented with condyloma acuminatum (Figure 2). Noninfectious dermatoses affected 61 (36.3%) of the 168 patients. Among the noninfectious dermatoses, inflammatory dermatoses was the most prevalent, with seborrheic dermatitis being the main condition observed in 27 (11.6%) patients.

The Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Cases of and Deaths From AIDS, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C: Interrupted Time Series Analysis

The Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Cases of and Deaths From AIDS, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C: Interrupted Time Series Analysis

Syphilis cases include both primary and secondary syphilis. Cases that were reported as cases of notifiable infectious disease and died as a result of that infectious disease are reported as deaths, excluding deaths due to accidents or noninfectious diseases. The primary outcome was the number of cases and deaths reported by month for AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C before and after lockdown implementation. The secondary outcomes were the incidence and case-fatality ratios.

The Use of Spatial Analysis in Syphilis-Related Research: Protocol for a Scoping Review

The Use of Spatial Analysis in Syphilis-Related Research: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Gestational syphilis and congenital syphilis directly impact reproductive and child health. During pregnancy, syphilis may lead to abortion, stillbirth, premature birth, neonatal death, and early or late congenital manifestations [13]. A previous study used spatial analysis to assess the epidemiological status of congenital syphilis in Brazil and found that the most affected municipalities were those with a large migratory flow, those bordering other countries, and those with many tourists [10].

HIV Prevalence and Risk Factors Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men in Southwest China: Cross-sectional Questionnaire Study

HIV Prevalence and Risk Factors Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men in Southwest China: Cross-sectional Questionnaire Study

One study investigated HIV and syphilis infections among young men who have sex with men who were 16-25 years old in 4 cities in China and found the prevalence of HIV and syphilis to be 6.7% and 8.3%, respectively, in 2008 [16]. Using a prospective cohort design, 1 study reported an HIV incidence rate of 6.7 per 100 person-years among young men who have sex with men in urban areas of China in 2010 [17].

Factors Associated With Syphilis Transmission and Acquisition Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Protocol for a Multisite Egocentric Network Study

Factors Associated With Syphilis Transmission and Acquisition Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Protocol for a Multisite Egocentric Network Study

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. In the primary stage, syphilis spreads by direct contact with a syphilitic sore (ie, chancre), which can progress in the secondary stage to include symptoms such as skin rashes and mucous membrane lesions. In 2020, a total of 41,655 primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis cases were reported in the United States, and 81% of these cases were among men [1].
